The article offers insights into the international exhibition on the theme “Light and Darkness” and places the work within its broader context. During the week in Florence, I also had the special opportunity to visit the landmark Fra Angelico exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi.

BIOGRAPHY

Susanne Herbold is a contemporary abstract artist working between Cologne and Mallorca. Her large-scale paintings move within the tension between intuition and control and explore perception, emotional space, and open pictorial situations.

Her work has been shown internationally, including in New York, Miami, Barcelona, Berlin, and Florence, among them the XV Florence Biennale.

She is featured in the art publication Great Artists of Mallorca, edited by photographer Axel Ruske.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Abstraction, to me, is not a reduction but an expansion.

It opens a space in which perception is not predetermined but allowed to emerge. My paintings do not depict what already clearly exists — they invite meaning to be experienced rather than searched for.

The works are usually created on a large scale on canvas, partly beginning on unstretched fabric. At the outset, one or two dominant colors are defined. They give the painting a direction without determining its outcome.

The process develops in layers and in dialogue with what is already present. Adding, overpainting, withdrawing and intervening again interweave. Conscious decisions alternate with intuitive moments. Control and release keep the painting in balance. In a strongly outcome-oriented world, this openness becomes a deliberate counter-movement.

The starting point is the conviction that perception is not passive. Viewers bring their own experience and continue what they see. The work is created in the studio — its effect unfolds in the encounter.

A painting leaves the studio as a unique piece and yet remains open in its meaning. The works are intended to be accessible but not arbitrary. They invite time and a personal relation. In this way, a work becomes not only part of a space but a lasting influence on its atmosphere.
