Susanne Herbold

Susanne Herbold is a contemporary abstract painter. She works in her studios in Cologne and Mallorca. Her large-format works oscillate between color, energy, and intuition.

Artist Statement

My work explores how perception constructs meaning.

I create large-scale abstract paintings that appear intuitive at first glance, yet are carefully balanced between control and openness. Layers of color, gestures and interruptions form visual situations rather than fixed compositions. The paintings do not depict an image — they invite the viewer to complete it.

I am interested in the moment when observation becomes interpretation. What we recognize in an abstract surface often reveals more about the observer than about the work itself. My paintings therefore function as spaces of projection: areas where memory, expectation and personal experience begin to interact with form and color.

Instead of directing a narrative, I construct conditions. Structure and reduction, tension and silence coexist. The work remains intentionally unresolved so that perception stays active.

The painting is not the final statement — it is the beginning of a dialogue.

Coming Home – Art in Motion

With Coming Home, a new chapter begins: For the first time, one of my artworks meets the world of cycling – and becomes the foundation of an exclusive jersey edition. Inspired by the sun, the sea, movement and the feeling of coming home, this design merges aesthetics with energy, art with function – and emotion with momentum. Created together with Marcel Wüst and Vergesport, the collection is made for everyone who loves cycling and has a passion for art, design and individuality. It’s for those who move – with style, with heart, with intention.
