Great Artists of Mallorca

Great Artists of Mallorca is an international art and book project by photographer Axel Ruske in collaboration with editor Regina Elisabeth “Lizzy” Rautenberg. The publication is dedicated to contemporary artists living and working on Mallorca and combines photographic portraiture, studio visit, and artistic position.

My own photo shoot took place in our garden beneath old olive trees. The central black-and-white portrait that opens my section in the book was created there, along with additional images that also appear in the publication. Each artist is presented across six pages in the trilingual volume. An accompanying making-of video further documents the photographic process and offers a rare glimpse behind the scenes.

The book was first presented on June 12, 2025, at the Gerhardt Braun Gallery in Palma de Mallorca. Selected portraits were shown as large-format prints, extending the photographic concept into the exhibition space.

Being included in this project feels like a special recognition of my work to date. At the same time, the encounters with the participating artists have developed into personal connections that continue to this day. For me, the project highlights how important exchange and mutual awareness are within contemporary art — not only through the work itself, but also between the people behind it.
